A much better week ....

Some time ago I referred to a roller coaster ride. Well here we go again, but this time a definite up slope!!
Douglas suddenly seemed to have established a new sense of peace and acceptance by the end of last week and his mood lightened very considerably. This co-incided with the arrival of a new Registrar who talked with him about how he was going to progress to getting out of the Western and on to re-hab. He spoke with Doug about having a set of weekly goals (agreed with Doug) against which to measure progression and made it quite clear that Douglas was not sick enough to still be lying abed.
Much to our surprise, Doug agreed with all his plans and gave him the "O" finger sign!!
Things started to look up quite a bit.

His chest is still an issue and the Docs decided that, on the basis of a couple of cultures, that they'd put him on a 5 day anti-biotic blast (Wednesday). Furthermore the Opthalmist told him that he really wanted to re-apply the eyelid stitches to his left eye in order to make sure that it was not damaged before a 'final fix' could be applied. Doug was a bit upset at the thought of this (Thursday) and we were somewhat concerned at the possibility that he'd refuse at the last minute.
However, this afternoon (Friday) the stitching went ahead and after it all Doug was quite relaxed.
Absolutely brilliant !!!!!!!
We read out a few messages (Lorna, Jules and DavyP) and this caused a few tears, but he quickly recovered.

He does seem to have crossed over some invisible boundary ..................

He now has a new 'laptop like device' for speech generation and thinks its a bit dubious but is prepared to give it a go. On Thursday he wrote that he wished a very happy holiday to one of the nurses who was off to Malta for a couple of weeks - sheesh, he continually surprises us!

Keep up the support folks .................... at long last it seems to be really working!

Hi Doug, I am so glad you are on the up though I wanted to tell you all my news when I was last up in Scotland, I am sure your mum and dad have done so by now.

I am in Anchorage in Alaska as I type this, off on camping in the wilderness tomorrow! Yikes!! I am thinking of all that you have to bear with and it makes me realise how lucky we all are, and never to take life for granted. One of the main reasons I am on this trip really Doug - you are a bit of an inspiration. If you can do what you will have to do to get yourself up and about again, then I sure have hell can get round the world by myself!

Thinking of you and your mum and dad, and looking for forward to meeting Dave when I get to Tasmania!

Lots of love

Hey barky,

So...its official... bloater boy over here is over a tenth of a metric tonne. How cool is THAT? Yup.... it the scales at 110kg today.. and that is the benchmark pal. Gotta lose 30kg.

So just as I hear about your progress, I will post how I am doing.
Went for a run in the forest this morning which was beautiful, and then walked to and back from work (about 2 hours all told) so legs are a bit sore.

Oh, and in other news, Tall Dave and Tammi are expecting their first wee tot, and 90 foot and Irish are expecting their second.

Guess what?

It must be something in the air.

Yup... coz Meeshy is pregnant with our second too. She is due at the end of February and is currently throwing her guts up. Poor thing.

Anyway... we don't know if it's pink or blue and will probably wait to find out. I like Farquar and Gertrude (or Gerty) for names. Or Thor and Wonder Woman if its a chick.

OK.. Meeshy and the wee tot say "elllloooow" (as Isla says it) from Sydney, as they are across seeing Meeshys sister and Bruv off for 3 years as they are coming to live in Brussels - very exciting.

Anyway... off to bed for little old me.... thinking of ya chum and rip up in yer physio sesh's....ya ken? Do super 8A moves for me chum!

Yer Pal.

Hey Dougie,
Really glad to hear you are doing well. Keep up the fight.
Think of you often; was recounting our spacehopping adventures the other day to some friends. Needless to say they were out scouting for large spacehoppers and a beach other than the pebbly one in Brighton on which to get bouncing!! I am really looking forward to coming to visit you when I can finally get myself up north. Soon, hopefully.

Lots of Love,

Rhea
